AI: Is It Good or Bad?

Artificial intelligence has been shown as evil in science fiction for decades now, but with recent advancements, these stories may actually become reality.

Over the past few years, and especially over the last few months, massive strides have been made in the field of artificial intelligence. In 2022, with the release of AI image generators, such as DALL-E and Midjourney, generating images of anything you can imagine became widely available to anyone. While this is mostly used for creative purposes, it has been used to create rather convincing (at first glance) fake photos of celebrities, like a series of photos of Donald Trump being arrested, or Pope Francis wearing a puffer jacket and other streetwear.

With the release of ChatGPT in late 2022, anyone with internet can endlessly generate any amount of text about anything. It has been used to write scripts for videos, essays, and can even write code. This could possibly be used to write mass amounts of fake articles to spread a certain ideology.

In the last few months, AI speech has become much more advanced. People can create audio of celebrities saying anything they want. While this could be used for malicious purposes to ruin someone's image, it is mostly just used for jokes and funny videos (for now). AI singing has also been advancing, where you can listen to any artist cover another artist's song.

Many are concerned about how quick artificial intelligence is advancing. Elon Musk and Apple cofounder Steve Wozniak have signed for a temporary ban on creating AI. This has many worried, however, some believe this is only an attempt to slow down their competitors.

All in all, despite AI's many benefits, it will eventually need many restrictions, and we may never get to see what all it is really capable of.
